QUEER HISTORY BIKE TOUR: Manhattan island is a big place to explore, but a bicycle shrinks it to manageable proportions, as history buffs will discover by joining our Queer History Bike Tour, Saturday, May 7, rain date May 8. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Boathouse in Central Park for a leisurely ride with plenty of conversation. All are welcome and there is no charge; all riders must wear helmets. Academic historians as well as members of Fast and Fabulous, New York's LGBT bike club, will offer brief presentations at a half-dozen sites of interest to queer historians, among them the Stonewall Inn, where the gay revolution began in 1969; the Slide, a "working boy's drag bar" on Bleecker St.; and the home of Bruce Nugent, gay poet of the Harlem Renaissance and subject of the recent film "Brother to Brother." Without the efforts of these women we might not have a Palisades Interstate Park today. The bike portion of the bike-hike will follow hilly Henry Hudson Drive (aka River Road). Bicycle the future route of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, a car-free connection along Brooklyn's waterfront. This is a 10-mile ride at a family pace (under 10mph) from Newtown Creek in Greenpoint to Valentino Pier in Red Hook. We'll stop at least once along the way for restrooms and water. Information on the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway project will be available at the start and finish of the tour. Pre-registration is recommended. Tour is free and open to all.

Brooklyn Waterfront Witches Brew Bike Ride

This tour heads south down Furman Street to Red Hook briefly highlighting the proposed waterfront greenway and features of the burgeoning neighborhoods. From Red Hook, the ride will continue up the banks of the Gowanus Canal exploring the hidden treasures of landmarks, bridges, dead end streets and a full history of the neighborhood will be narrated by your guide. The riding pace is very easy and stops often. A perfect tour for beginners and all ages. We will arrive around 12:00 pm at the head of the Canal. Pack a lunch or snack and some water. The tour will be cancelled if it is raining at 8:30 am. The ride is free but $10 donations will be accepted to finance the Gowanus Dredger Canoe Club's environmental restoration efforts. Don't forget a helmet, sunscreen and a camera for the spectacular views.

Visions of a Bikeable New York

NYBC and NOSC are hosting a workshop to solicit ideas and feedback for what New Yorkers see as the future for cycling. We hope to incorporate ideas from commuters as well as weekend riders and families alike. The ideas will be judged with a ceremony to ackowledge all the ideas as well as to present the top three ideas. The event will focus on ideas that are possible through the various city and state agencies responsible for bike related projects and will clarify the processes neccessary to complete these projects. The recognition ceremony will also highlight some of the current bike projects being planned and completed and will celebrate bike month and all things bikes. For registering, prize and workshop details visit www.nybc.net and go to "Visions for a Bikeable New York". Please keep the document less than 10 pages and include diagrams and pictures where appropriate. Submissions can also be multimedia or videos as well. Space will be limited, so please RSVP if you plan to attend.
